Chancellor Klein Announces Plan to Build An Annex At PS8

Annex Will Create New Classrooms and Alleviate Overcrowding

Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today announced plans to build an annex at PS 8 in Brooklyn. The annex will give the school additional capacity, alleviating overcrowding at the Brooklyn Heights elementary school. The School Construction Authority (SCA), which will oversee the project, will scope out the work and design the annex in the next year before it seeks bids for the construction of the facility. The Department of Education expects that the annex will open in September 2011.

Clowning Around!

Parents and friends came together last Tuesday to watch a hilarious performance by about 100 Kindergarten students in "the Clown Olympics" at the PS8 auditorium. Students donned costumes, hats and face painting, carried props and performed all kinds of crazy tricks for over an hour. The performance was a culmination of a workshop by the Circus Arts and Clown Theatre Workshop, run by Marquis Studios and clowns Fred Collins and Luanne Dietrich, known as TwoTooFar.

Teachers and Students Collaborate on Original School Play, SOLDEA ISLAND

You may have noticed the energy in the halls on Tuesday afternoons...or Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays too... .For weeks now 75 students from 3rd through 5th grades have been working with seven teachers on an original play called Soldea Island, written by Robert Weinstein and based on an illustrated story by drama teacher Noelle Gentile. Directed by Ms. Gentile and 4th-grade-teacher Angie Nelson, the play is the school's first theatrical production in years and it is built on teamwork.

Starting Wednesday, May 21st through Wednesday, June 11th, we are launching the Blastoff for Box tops competition. The class who collects the most Boxtops will win a Popsicle party and thirty minutes of recess time!!!

Food allergy management affects almost everyone in the PS8 community, directly or indirectly. Childhood food allergies are increasingly prevalent. Reactions can be mild, but they can also escalate to a life-threatening medical emergency, in minutes.

Students Can Enter Architectural Photography Contest

All students / Deadline: June 13

All New York City public school students (grades pre-K-12) are invited to submit architectural photographs of their school for a citywide exhibit titled "PS Architecture: Through the Lens of a Student Photographer." There will be one winner for elementary, middle, and high school from each borough and one citywide grand prize winner from each school level.
