Parsons Enrichment Program

Imagine you are sitting down to a tea party in colonial times, and you find yourself in the company of Peggy Shippen Arnold , Benedict Arnold's wife. What would you have to say to her, especially if you found out she abetted her husband's traitorous conduct during the Revolutionary War?

PS 8 fourth graders got a chance to role-play scenarios such as this, dressed in Colonial-era wigs they had created with help from teachers and students from Parsons: New School for Design. Each PS 8 student was first provided a postcard with a picture on it of a historical figure from the Revolutionary War era. Based on these images, they designed the afore-mentioned wigs -- concocted from the deceptively simple materials of plastic bags, paper and cotton balls -- to wear, enabling them to physically impersonate that figure. They also researched significant aspects of that person's history and daily life (hence the Colonial times tea party!).

Pre-K's Rotunda Gallery Residency 2009

It's Tuesday morning and the pre-K classes' creative juices are flowing. Rotunda Gallery's artist educator, Monique, is discussing Pat Steir and her paintings of waterfalls. Great artists are the inspiration for the curriculum developed jointly with Pre-K teachers. In fact, several of their works hang in the classroom: there are pipe cleaner fish tank sculptures and more abstract wire sculptures inspired by Alexander Calder and two dimensional works featuring geometric shapes inspired by Mondrian.

Mysterious Art

One of PS 8's Enrichment Programs is the Guggenheim Museum's Learning Through Art program, which is run by Jenny Bevill, a teaching artist at the Guggenheim. Her assistant, Rachel Tengowski, is an artist and manager of visitors' services at the Museum of Modern Art. Ms. Bevill's general mission is to work with 3rd and 4th grade students at PS 8 on art projects that are related to their curriculum. As part of the program, students visit the Guggenheim three times during the year and view slides of artwork to promote open-ended thinking--what was the artist feeling and thinking.

Sousa, Ragtime, and the Blues
Return to PS 8!

image 1

Photography by Nathalie Schueller

This spring, the strains of blues and rags have echoed on the 3rd floor as PS 8 father and professional musician Jeff Newell once again presents his "Sousa, Music of All Americans" residency to the fifth graders. Over six weeks, the residency focuses on the lives of several notable American musicians and their influence on the music of John Philip Sousa. During the residency, Newell first visits the fifth grade classes in full period dress to talk about ragtime music and the life of Scott Joplin, guiding the students to see how the history of our nation is tied to its music, geography, and culture. Subsequent classes explore the blues traditions that grew out of life in the American South, focusing on Robert Johnson and W.C. Handy, and the brass band tradition that was once an integral part of the American social fabric.

Barge Music

PS8 kids had a first-hand and up-close treat from Barge Music February 10 when violinist Mark Peskanov visited with a luthier, someone who makes not only violins, but specialty instruments as well. The pair spent several hours visiting classes from Kindergarten through 5th grade, playing the instruments, explaining how they make music, and energizing the kids in the process.
