Mayor Bloomberg and others visit the school amid media frenzy.
PS 8 parents and students returning to school on Tuesday September 5th found more than they bargained for on the front steps. News crews hovered around the doors, looking for a glimpse of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City Department of Education Chancellor Joel Klein, and other visiting dignitaries from City Hall, who were all there to wish PS 8 another successful year.
Mayor Bloomberg praised the school as a neighborhood success story, noting its unusually quick turnaround in moving off the city's list of troubled schools. "Everyone on staff here deserves an enormous amount of credit," he said, after greeting Mr. Williamson's first-grade class and taking attendance.
Parent Coordinator Precious Jones-Walker noted that "in the four years since we started doing First Day Celebrations we've gone from 200 students in 2003 to our current enrollment of 441 students. We've accomplished so much in such a short time, and it's nice to see the Mayor here to honor that."
