Rotunda Gallery Artist and Teacher Monique Ford and Gallery Director of Education Hawley J. Hussey have been brainstorming with Pre-K classroom teachers Mariann Levkulic and Ann Barretta to create an exciting curriculum called "The Great Masters." Part of the program includes the study of collages by the artist Henri Matisse.

For this project, the children cut-out different colored papers and cellophane and incorporated them into a collage in two stages: first they glued the papers into a collage, then painted over them in bright, primary colors. Many of the children were already familiar with the concept of combining two or more colors to make a new color. The combination red and white was particularly popular with the girls!
Last week the children had a class about stained glass and the places you can find them. "I saw stained glass at my synagogue in the shape of people", reported one of the girls.

In future sessions the children will explore basic printmaking using carved Styrofoam similar to that of Romaire Bearden, making mobiles in the style of Alexander Calder, and self-portraits influenced by the artist Chuck Close, amongst other projects. The residency will conclude with the students' artwork being installed at the Rotunda Gallery. A special opening featuring the Pre_K students work will be announced in the near future.
