Dear PS 8 Families,
Welcome back! The PS 8 Library is looking forward to an exciting new school year. Through the support of an incredible group of parent volunteers and many generous book donations from the families of PS 8, our library's collection is newly organized and well stocked with great resources for our students' use. The development of an audiovisual collection and a professional collection for teachers are just two examples of the ways in which the PS 8 Library has expanded its benefit to our school community.
This school year each class will visit the library on a weekly basis. During each library period students will participate in a lesson followed by the opportunity to explore and borrow materials from the library collection. Library lessons are designed in order to foster the growth of independent library users, information literacy skills, and, of course, a love of reading and literature. Library materials circulate for one week, but may be renewed twice (3 weeks total). In addition, popular titles may be placed on reserve by the librarian and placed on the hold shelf in the library for up to one week. In order to begin borrowing privileges, each student must have a signed permission slip on file with the library (download and complete this Library Card Application form).
The PS 8 Library, like most libraries citywide, purchases new materials annually from a limited budget. To supplement our budget the library has developed a successful voluntary birthday donation program in which families may choose and donate a new hardcover book to the PS 8 Library in honor of a student's birthday. This program has expanded the resources available to our students tremendously. Books donated are commemorated with a special bookplate beautifully designed by Paul O. Zelinsky to recognize the donor's contribution and birth date. If you wish to make a donation to the library, I recommend taking a look at the "PS 8 Library" wish list located online at amazon.com, or by visiting our local Barnes and Noble bookstore located at 106 Court Street. The Barnes and Noble bookstore on Court Street has agreed to sell one book for this purpose at a 20% discount, tax-exempt for donation to the PS 8 Library. New books always generate a lot of excitement for students. Please consider donating a book or magazine subscription that your own child would love to see in the library.
