Third grade teacher Brandie Hayes and ELL teacher Tracey Posluszny are coaching the PS 8 robotics team. They are thrilled to announce that a new robotics season has officially begun and they will be holding tryouts for interested children in grades 2-5. Tryouts will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, September 24th and 25th from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Please discuss with your child that there is a commitment to attend robotics practice twice a week, both on Wednesday and Thursday. If you are not able to commit to that schedule, please reconsider trying out for robotics.
If your child is interested in trying out for this year's team, please pick up an application outside of room 307 (Ms. Hayes' room.) Complete the application and return it to the envelope outside Room 307 by this Friday, September 19th. Your child will receive a letter notifying him or her as to which day they were selected for tryouts. If there is a conflict in your schedule and your child will not be able to try out either one of these days, there is a place on the application to notify us (this exception will only be made for tryouts).
Children on the robotics team will learn how to build and program robots using special Lego robotics kits to achieve specific tasks that are related to this year's scientific theme Climate Connections. The team will be working towards competing in a borough-wide, and possibly city-wide robotics tournament in December and January. After the competitions are over, the team will be able to explore their own interests with robots.
