On Thursday, October 22, an exciting program of readings by PS 8 students and faculty at the Court Street Barnes & Noble will kick off the 2009 Book Fair and Readathon. Stephen Ringold, a.k.a. Mr. Meatloaf, a veteran of the Big Apple Circus and a PS 8 dad, will host the program, which starts at 6:00 PM.
But don't just stay for the program! During the week of the Book Fair, any Barnes & Noble purchase made using a PS 8 voucher will result in a portion of the sale being returned to PS 8.
You can download the voucher here.

The voucher can be used at any Barnes & Noble store nationwide, and it's a great way to start your early holiday shopping. You can also shop online with the voucher at www.bn.com/mybookfair and a slightly smaller portion of your purchase will be returned to PS 8. Teacher wish lists will be available in the Court Street store and sent to you by your class parents, so be sure to pick up a book for your child's classroom. We use the money we receive from book fair sales to fund the very important rewards for the children and classrooms participating in the Readathon, and any extra goes to the PS 8 library.

The day after the book fair kickoff is the start of the 4th annual Readathon. The readathon is the only fundraising event in which the PS 8 students raise money, and they do so by reading! Last year's students read 420,000 minutes and raised over $30,000 for the school, with over 70% of the student body participating. Third-grade teacher Melissa Browning says, "What I love about the PS 8 Readathon is that it really gets kids motivated to read. It helps them improve upon many of the reading skills we are trying to build up in the beginning of the school year: increasing focus and stamina, pushing themselves to read more, and choosing 'just-right' books that they love." Be sure to check your child's backpack for book fair vouchers and Readathon reading logs and pledge sheets, and we all hope you'll join in making this year's Readathon the most successful ever.
