What a week! Snowballs on Wednesday,
8Ball on Thursday!

Photographs by Aki Tucci

The snow was piled up high after the storm of the season on Wednesday. Though it was frosty and black in the streets last Thursday night, the scene at Galapagos Art Center in Dumbo was spirited and warm with crowds gathered for the 8Ball. This nascent school event was designed a year ago to get people together in the neighborhood in the deep of the winter to mix and mingle in support of school enrichment. Prosecco was passed to intrepid guests upon stepping in the door. Ps8 parents Steve Heisler, Jennifer Kendall and Doug Bivano were at the bar. Beautiful finger food by Tazza and sushi by Iron Chef were savored and desserts, the delicious handiwork of local favorite Almondine and cookies by One Girl Cookie disappeared like magic.

Beyond the good company, the highlight of the evening was Blake Amos and his band, Dirty Samba Soul. Their unique blend of bassa nova and samba filled the room with the syncopated rhythm of acoustic and electric guitar and drums. The rough and dramatic space of Galapagos (generously donated for the occasion) made a beautiful backdrop for the band, not a few people danced to the fusion beat of samba, bassa nova, funk and reggae.

Though admittedly not Brazil, it was a great get away with good friends if only for a few hours and all for a good cause. The event raised over $3000 in support of the PTA and enrichment programs in the school. Thanks go out to Nathalie Fried, Gigi Dement, Liza Haffenberg, fundraising co-chairs Cristina Soto, Lily Toy and PTA Co-President Lisa Kopel for all their hard work in realizing a great time for all.
